Beffa's Bar & Restaurant
About us
Beffa’s story began on St. Patrick’s Day of 1898. Anselmo (Sam) Beffa (16 of 17 children) came over from Madrano Switzerland and opened a saloon on the southeast corner of Olive and Beaumont streets. Sam was joined by his brother Attilio (Till) (17 of 17 children) in 1900 and it became Beffa Brothers. When the hard times of prohibition came along in 1929, the brothers began serving sandwiches in order to make ends meet. Being able to adapt to hard times has always been the “Beffa mentality”. We just keep pivoting until we make it through.
In the 1950's, Attilio's sons, Francis and Robert, and their sister Marie took over Beffa's. In May of 1966, they moved across the street to its current location at 2700 Olive Street. This is when the "speakeasy" vibe came into play. You had to know someone to find the place because they didn't have a sign on the building. Beffa's became known as "The Place without a Sign" and it is still that way today.
In the 1980's, Francis' son Michael, the 3rd generation, along with his sister Terry and cousin John, took over the restaurant and bar. Then in 2005, ownership transferred to Michael and his wife Nancy. They had three sons, all of whom helped out at the restaurant since they were little. Michael and Nancy retired in 2011 and their youngest son, Paul (the 4th generation) decided to take over ownership.
Paul molded the illustrious history of the past generations with his touch of modern and created an Elevated Sports Bar & Restaurant. Beffa's has become "The Place to Be!" carrying on for 126+ years.
